WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF?

Car and trailer practical test
The car and trailer test is based on the lorry driving test and lasts for approximately one hour. Please note that B+E tests are conducted at vocational (bus and lorry) driving test centres.
The towing test (B+E) includes an off-road reverse manoeuvre, a controlled stop, uncoupling and coupling and driving on the road.

Safety questions for a car and trailer
These are questions regarding basic safety checks that a driver should carry out to ensure the vehicle is safe for use.
As vehicle technology advances, more and more vehicles are being equipped with electronic diagnostic systems, it will be acceptable for a candidate to refer to the vehicle information system (if fitted) when answering questions on fluid levels or tyre pressures.
Candidates will be asked five questions, which will be a combination of ‘show me’ and ‘tell me’. A driving fault will be recorded for each incorrect answer to a maximum of four driving faults. If the candidate answers all five questions incorrectly, a serious fault will be recorded.

WHAT IF I PASSED MY TEST BEFORE JANUARY 1997?

If you passed your car driving test before January 1 1997 you'll retain your existing entitlement to tow trailers until this licence expires. You are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM. You're also entitled to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750 kgs MAM. If you passed your test on or after 1 January 1997 you're required to pass this additional driving test in order to gain entitlement to category B+E which will allow you to tow caravans and trailers. See our FAQ for more details on licence categories.
